Trustee, and Chair of the Medical Advisory Board ("MAB"), of the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK ("TNA"). Joanna founded this national patient support group together with a patient, Elizabeth Boulot, in 1999, as reported in the British Medical Association ("BMA") Dossier on Pioneers in Patient Care. By 2001 it had 300 members. Today it has around 1,700 members, annual income of around £60,000, substantial costs and paid staff.
Joanna's contribution during this period included pioneering joint conferences between patients and healthcare professionals, six of which have been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and have significantly raised awareness among healthcare professionals. Over the last 23 years organised with the MAB all the annual scientific meetings and latterly speakers for the webinars. Gave general medical advice to the helpline, attended all Trustee meetings, contributed to the writing of all patient literature and to the regular newsletter. Published a book for patients and in the latest book included chapters written by members of the TNA. Kept the organisation in touch with the latest research and advised the Trustees on financial support for projects as well recruiting TNA members for projects e.g. core outcomes in TN, electronic pain diaries, impact of medications on quality of life.
